Dan Fitzgerald

Daniel Fitzgerald

Daniel P. Fitzgerald

1948 - 2023

Daniel Patrick Fitzgerald passed away on April 29, 2023 in Sisters of Charity Hospital, Buffalo, NY.  He was born October 4, 1948 in Lockport, NY.  Dan received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Brockport, completed his course work and prepared his dissertation for a masters in Psychology when his mentor was fired a week before the dissertation was to be heard.

Dan was addicted to chess, reading, especially books about presidents, current and past.  He enjoyed family, music, humor, and working on his houses.  Dan was able to do all things related to home improvement.  There were always new improvements he was curating.  Dan was funny, kind, patient, and amazing at explaining things.

Dan’s career was many faceted.  He worked cleaning stores for his uncle as a young man, had a refinishing business with his friend Larry Hayden.  Dan was employed as Director of Niagara County Child Support Services in the 80’s, when fashion was the worst.  He worked as a district director in Florida in the early 90’s, fashion improved.  (As you know Dan was very interested in fashion :)  .)  Dan worked with CSEA Systems a computer software company that provided software to child support agencies.  He was assistant director of Summit County Ohio Child Support in the 90’s where he met his wifey.  Dan began a consulting business in 2005 and worked with various state’s child support programs advising on law and computer program issues.

Dan was predeceased by his parents John J. and Katherine (Morris) Fitzgerald, brother J. Michael Fitzgerald, sister-in-law Ellen Fitzgerald, step-mother Betty, and step-sister Sandra Harrington.

Dan is survived by his wifey, Dorothy; step-daughter Emily T. (Peter, and grandson Simon) Osley; sisters Joanne Roberts and Maureen (Steve) Merchant; step-brother James N. (Virginia O’Neil) Brewer; Partner in Crime Larry Roberts; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and many friends.  For each Dan had a fond spot in his heart.

A special thank you to the Sisters of Charity staff who did all they could to make Dan comfortable and accommodate visits from the wifey were much appreciated.

Relatives and friends may call Saturday, May 20th from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport with a closing prayer at 1:30 pm.  In lieu of flowers donations to a charity of one’s choice, (Dan gave to the local homeless shelter and St. Joseph’s Indian School www.stjo.org)  would be appreciated.

Dan was absolutely the most brilliant star in our class. Because of his unassuming nature few saw this. His wit was only surpassed by this intelligence. Dan and I  became good friends in a sad way. We both lost our mothers at 12 years old and that created a strong bond. We remained friends for the next 63 years and saw or spoke whenever we could. He was my rock. Of all the stars in our class that we have lost I will miss him the most. Knowing Dan Heaven will be a better place. I am heartbroken

As I wrote to Lisa shortly after she broke the sad news about Dan passing away this past weekend, I'm convinced Dan flew under the radar to a large degree during our three years together at LSHS for many maybe even most of us who didn’t have the pleasure like Lisa of attending North Park with Dan---regrettably, I didn’t begin to fully appreciate until years later Dan's sense of humor and brilliance which Lisa recounts so unabashedly in referring to him as her "rock"---my loss then and the Class of ‘66’s loss now---first his "big brother" Mike, Class of '64, dying much too soon just a few years ago and now Dan---our deepest sympathies go out to Dorothy and the entire Fitzgerald clan!!!🙏🏻
